The Piano Pages: Wagner Biography

Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig, Germany, on May 22, 1813. He began studying piano music when he was 9 years old. He was a poor student in school, but he was very interested in poetry and drama.

He was an ardent admirer of Beethoven's music - it has been said that no young man ever knew Beethoven's music better.

Wagner wrote his first symphony in 1832. He was also a great writer for orchestras - no orchestra writer has ever excelled him. Some of his greatest operas were "Rienzi," "Flying Dutchman," "Tannhauser," and "Lohengrin".

Richard Wagner died in Venice, Italy on February 13th, 1883.
