The Piano Pages: Schubert Biography
Franz Peter Schubert was born in Lichtenthal, a suburb of Vienna, on January 31, 1797. Two other great musicians were living in Vienna at the time of his birth: Haydn, who was 65, and Beethoven, who was 27.
Schubert showed his musical ability at a very young age - when he was 11, his harmony teacher said of him, "He has learned everything and God has been his teacher."
From the time he was 13 until his death, he wrote around 1,000 compositions. (He wrote nine symphonies and many string quartets. Two of his best symphonies are "The Unfinished" and the "C Major Symphony.")
He wrote about 600 songs - he is considered one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His songs include "Hedge Roses," "The Erl King," "The Wanderer," and "Hark, Hark the Lark." He wrote "The Erl King" in a day when he was only 18. He wrote "Hark, Hark the Lark" in 20 minutes in a restaurant while waiting for his breakfast.
He died in Vienna on November 19, 1828, the year after Beethoven died. He was buried in the cemetery at Wahring, near Beethoven, whom he deeply reverenced.
