The Piano Pages: Haydn Biography

Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, Austria, on April 1, 1732.

One day when he was 5, he was playing a make-believe violin while the rest of the family were singing. A relative noticed how well he kept time and persuaded Haydn's father to let Haydn go with him to Hainburg to learn music. He stayed there for 2 years and studied singing and the rudiments of music.

He befriended Prince Esterhazy, a man devoted to music, and he lived with the Esterhazy family for 30 years. In return, he wrote music for the orchestra, conducted the orchestra and singers, and was expected to lay a new composition on the Prince's plate every morning at breakfast.

Haydn wrote 125 symphonies, 53 works for the piano, 24 operas, and nine concertos for the violin.

He was known as a kind-hearted, cheerful, lovable man. The players in his orchestra affectionately called him "Papa Haydn."

Franz Joseph Haydn died in Vienna on May 11, 1809.
