The Piano Pages: Handel Biography
George Frederick Handel was born in Halle, Saxony, Germany on February 23, 1685.
Handel played the harpsichord (a forerunner to our modern piano), violin, and organ.
At the age of 25, Handel moved to London and lived there the rest of his life - because he lived in England for so long and wrote most of his great works there, the English claim him as an English composer.
While on a visit to Dublin, Ireland, Handel wrote "The Messiah", the greatest oratorio ever written; he wrote it in about three weeks. He also wrote operas and music for the violin, organ, and orchestra.
George Frederick Handel died in London, England, on Good Friday, April 13, 1759. He is buried in Westminster Abbey in the Poet's Corner.
