Learn to Play the Piano: Getting Started

So you're interested in learning to play the piano but aren't sure where to begin? First of all, congratulations! You've chosen a beautiful hobby and a passion that you'll enjoy your whole life. You can learn to play the piano and, what's more, you can learn online. The first steps are very important, so be sure you hit the ground running.

What should your first step be?

It goes without saying that you need a piano or a musical keyboard. If you don't have a piano of your own yet, just be sure you have access to a piano that you can practice on regularly. When it comes to learning to play the piano, practice is of the utmost importance and the more you're able to practice, the faster you'll learn and the better you'll be.

You'll also need sheet music. You can find some really nice beginner's guides online as well as in your local music store. While we offer some sheet music on the site (click here to visit our sheet music index), we can't boast nearly the collection of some other sites. Check out the following links for great sheet music, some free and others worth more than the price they charge:

Or check your local bookstores or library for songbooks.

You may be interested in finding a local piano teacher. Piano teachers are invaluable and can help your progress tremendously. You can look in your phone book for suggestions, but you'll probably get your best help by asking around. Also, be sure to check online. Many piano teachers have websites, or at least facebook pages where they introduce themselves and allow you to contact them.

Okay, you have your instrument, you have your music, and you have a teacher. (Or online lessons). What more can you need?

Practice. Patience. And more Practice!
