"That Unavoidable Practice" by Edwin E. Holt
You "must practice." Possibly you are required to perform as a duty what hundreds are longing for opportunity to do as a pleasure. Be this as it may, you must practice.
This being so - if the practice must be done - why not practice in such a manner as to make it count something for you? Why not make this practice a step forward toward your musical and social prominence rather than a step toward the "back number" shelf?
Music was one of the most interesting things the world knew centuries before the Christian Era, and it has gathered more and more interest every moment from that time to this. You are as able to find these interesting things as anyone. You can if you will! The fault is not with the music, but with you.
You must practice. Note carefully that "Only Correct Practice Makes Perfect!" Careless practice is worse than no practice at all. It is destructive of character, destructive of the real you. It is as possible for you to "practice yourself into a slovenly piano thumper as it is for you to correctly practice yourself into an artistic pianist." If practice must be done, why not be sensible and make every minute of it count something for you!
