I’m still in shock after last night – along with everyone else.
I’m just not 100% sure WHY I’m so shocked. I mean, the best singer never wins this competition. America hasn’t, in my opinion, gotten it right since Kelly. I think the best the show’s ever seen have been Chris, Bo, Ace, Constantine, Mandisa, KatharineJennifer Hudson, and LaToya. Not one of them won, and only one made it to the finals (Hopefully Kat will make it 2).
For one thing, the Vote for the Worst camp has mind numbing numbers of people who vote and vote and vote for the underdog they choose. Taylor has been their most recent poster boy. Last year, they gave Scott and Anthony a long ride – right past Constantine, which is still one of the craziest jokes I’ve ever witnessed.
For another thing, people love underdogs – they’ll pull for the ones with the idiosyncrancies or the sad stories…. People they think have overcome hard knocks. They see someone like Chris, Constantine, or LaToya and think, “They don’t need this competition….they’ll be a star without AI.” , then they’ll call in for the ones they KNOW do need the competition.
Finally, when there’s someone who is so obviously the best – the media knows it, the judges know it, everyone with any sense at all knows it….. people tend to think that this person will “sail through.” I have personally been guilty of that before. One of my faves will have an amazing performance – and instead of calling and calling, I’ll just call a few times then go about doig what I was doing, thinking “(S)he’ll be fine.”
All the while, the other camps – who know they’re up against the best – vote like it’s the only thing they’ve got going. I think that’s why you have the likes of Constantine leaving before Scott, Anthony and Carrie – and Chris leaving way-freaking-too-early. Katharine’s fans KNEW Elvis had pushed her into the flames – they KNEW she depended on them to pull her out of the fire.
We Chris fans never even saw the smoke! And we all got burned.

P.S. I am happy for Katharine, though – she deserves to be in the finals, and with any luck she will be. She’ll just be with the wrong guy.

Yes and no. I saw the holes in Chris’ fan base just after his WONDERFUL WORLD performance.\Chris has a huge fan base, but there is a difference between widespread appeal and the AI Voters. Many people don’t even watch AI. People who watch AI fall into two categories – those who just watch and those who vote. The voters have been pretty much leaving after their favorite gets voted off. Paris fans for example left two weeks ago.
As I mentioned earlier, I was a major blogger for chris on the AI site. I blogged for chris because I could see the holes in his AI VOTING fan base. I began looking closely at the holes after he sang WONDERFUL WORLD. We all know that generally AI voters are not heavy rock or metal fans anyway, so it is always an uphill battle for a rocker like Chris to win. Also most rock and mental fans don’t even watch the show, and some who saw Chris labeled him as “Christian Rock.” This was not a plus.
I believe his AI voting fans voted and voted strong for the full two hours. So what happened?
One – Something happened in the technology. I know some fans dialed Chris’ number and got Katharine’s voice early in the voting hours. There were problems and AI has known this for years.
Two – To win AI, you have to appeal to the VOTING audience of AI. Well look at the TOP 3 and you will see what a lot of that audience wants. The Voting audience is different from the watching audience. To win, Chris would have had to make more compromises in his music to match the tastes of the Voting audience. Yes he had people like US, but the numbers among AI VOTERS weren’t there, and he wasn’t attracting the fans of those who were voted out, at least not in the numbers he needed. I saw that because I was working hard to sway their votes to chris. Pretty much, they were disgusted with AI just as we are now.
Truthfully,I am glad Chris didn’t compromise more than he did. He showed versatility, no one can argue with that, but he never pandered to the AI Voters.
Who really appreciated Chris? People who opened their ears and eyes. People who opened their minds and hearts to a singer with a rare gift. People who can appreciate music across genres. This is not the exact same audience as AI Voters.
Sorry this is long, but I wanted to share my observations as an AI blogger who blogged for Chris.

ACE and HIS BROTHER – Can’t wait to see them TV or in the movies. Movie Star Looks both of them. Hollywood would be start to pick them BOTH up.
TAYLOR – He is so hot, he is on fire. Will buy his CD.
Great AMerican Idol season – hopefully great CD’s will come out of this one.
