Musician Websites

If you aren’t familiar with The Black Lillies, I’d be honored to introduce you. The Black Lillies are an intoxicating mixture of bluegrass, Americana, and country music. They’re one of those bands that simply make you feel good the minute they pick up an instrument and make you smile the minute they open their mouth.

As someone who has loved music all of her life, I can never understand why people would only listen to one genre of music. To me, it’d be like only eating chicken every single day – or never eating anything except corn.

Like food, there are simply too many wonderful choices to restrict yourself! When I talk to someone who is familiar with a wide variety of music, I’m always impressed. The more, the better! This morning, for example, I personally have listened to 3 songs by The Black Lillies, 2 songs by Fergie, and one of my favorite songs of all time (Terence Trent D’Arby’s Wishing Well…. come on, has there ever been a better song?).

Visit The Black Lillies website to learn more about this ridiculously talented band. Be sure to check out their tour dates to see if they’re going to be in your area – it looks like they have a busy January and February coming up.

You can also visit (and Like) them on The Black Lillies Facebook page.

From Ray Charles.com:

Ray Charles was born Ray Charles Robinson on September 23, 1930 in Albany, Georgia.  Very early in his career, this American musician had the nickname “The Genius” bestowed upon him, and he became the embodiment of that term in so many areas of music.  He was a vocalist, performer, songwriter, bandleader and arranger who played keyboards and reeds.  He was an innovator in music who comfortably, confidently and successfully worked in rhythm and blues, gospel, country, jazz and rock.  He was an astute businessman who took the unprecedented action of insisting upon artistic control and ownership of his own master recordings, formed his own publishing companies and his own record labels.

In the 1950s, he broke down the barriers of sacred and secular music, fused elements of gospel, jazz and blues together and mixed it with a fiery, fervid style that would come to be known as soul music.  The same powerful gospel/jazz/blues mix would create the very foundation for rock and roll.

In the 1960s, he helped integrate country and pop music with his crossover success, most notably with his Modern Sounds of Country and Western Music, Vol. 1 and 2, both of which were released in 1962.  It kicked the doors wide-open for new audiences to find country music and to embrace Ray Charles.  Throughout his entire career, Ray Charles continued to mix musical styles at will, and with great success, scoring major hits on the R&B, Jazz, Country and Pop charts.

Ray Charles’ recording of “Georgia On My Mind” was made the official state song for Georgia in 1979.  He received The Kennedy Center Honors for exemplary lifetime achievement in the performing arts in 1986 from President Ronald Reagan and the National Medal of Arts in 1993 from President William Clinton.  In addition to winning 17 Grammy Awards, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987.  Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #10 on their list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” in 2004 and #2 on their list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” in 2008.

The 2004 feature film Ray, which portrays the life and career of Ray Charles, and stars Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles is the all-time number one music biopic, earning $125 million in worldwide box office.  Jamie Foxx won the Academy Award for “Best Actor In A Leading Role” for his performance.

Ray Charles died on June 10, 2004, two months before the release of his final album Genius Loves Company.  He was 73.

In 1986, Mr. Charles created what is now known as The Ray Charles Foundation which is dedicated to providing support in the area of hearing disorders and the empowerment of young people through education by offering foundation support to educational institutions and non-profit education programs.  The vision of The Ray Charles Foundation is to instill in the youth of America that “there is no challenge too great one cannot overcome.”

It’s always a great day when there’s news to report about one of my absolute favorite bands: Maroon 5.  Maroon 5′s new single “Misery” is available digitally today.  The track will appear on their highly anticipated third studio album, Hands All Over, due out on September 21st. Produced by rock studio legend Robert John “Mutt” Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard, The Cars), Hands All Over is a killer hybrid of rock, pop, funk and R&B.  Recorded at Lange’s Switzerland studio, the members of Maroon 5 locked themselves in the mountains to patiently craft their latest effort. Starting with the hard-rocking title track, the album takes several intoxicating twists and turns including such compositions as “Out of Goodbyes,” a stunning country ballad infused with musical and vocal contributions from Nashville chart-toppers Lady Antebellum. Long-time fans will get a thrill out of the propulsive “Stutter,” melody rich “Give A Little More” and “Don’t Know Much About That,” which professes a classic soulful vibe.

Head over to iTunes to grab “Misery” today and listen to the full track below.

Full album press release: ‘Hands All Over’

Maroon 5′s Highly Anticipated Third Album (Produced By Studio Legend Robert John “Mutt” Lange) is Set For Release on September 21st, 2010

Maroon 5 to kick off North American Concert Tour on July 30th

GRAMMY winning recording artist Maroon 5 is back with their highly anticipated third studio album, Hands All Over< (A&M/Octone), set for release on September 21st. Produced by rock studio legend Robert John “Mutt” Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard, The Cars),

Hands All Over is a killer hybrid of rock, pop, funk and R&B. In addition, the album’s first single will impact radio on June 28th. Following the release of the single, Maroon 5 has announced plans for a summer concert tour that will encompass nearly 30 dates by the end of the summer. The tour is set to kick off on July 30th and will feature a rotating group of special guests including Owl City, Guster, Kris Allen, VV Brown and Ry Cuming (please see routing below). Tickets for select dates of the tour will go on sale Friday, May 14th.

Maroon 5 began writing the songs that appear on Hands All Over after winding down from a world tour in support of their 2007 studio release It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. Several months later, the band received a phone call from Lange, who had heard that the band were beginning to write a new album, and expressed an interest in producing it.

“We didn’t even talk to anyone else,” Adam Levine, Maroon 5’s frontman says. “Mutt is undeniably one of the most successful producers who’s ever lived.”

Jesse Carmichael, the band’s keyboardist, added, “Mutt really helped us play to the best of our ability. And it drove us to be bigger and better than ever.”

The result is Hands All Over, a monumental record chock full of buoyant, unforgettable melodies.  Recorded at Lange’s Switzerland studio, the members of Maroon 5 locked themselves in the mountains to patiently craft their latest effort. Starting with the hard-rocking title track, the album’s 15 tracks take several intoxicating twists and turns including such compositions as “Out of Goodbyes,” a stunning country ballad infused with musical and vocal contributions from Nashville chart-toppers Lady Antebellum. Long-time fans will get a thrill out of “Misery,” with its funky guitars and high-stepping melody, as well as the propulsive “Stutter,” melody rich “Give A Little More” and “Don’t Know Much About That,” which professes a classic soulful vibe.

Tour dates for Maroon 5’’s 2010 concert tour can be seen on the band’s official site.

Jack's Mannequin

Jack’s Mannequin are creating a special music video for their single “Swim.” The lyrics, music and video are about keeping hope alive and growing in the difficult times that the world is now facing. The video is designed to inspire strength, courage and perseverance in the face of all obstacles.

We can all get behind that, right?

The band will be shooting a music video for “Swim” in June and want fans’ artwork in the video. Within the context of the song, the word Swim is used as a metaphor for hope, perseverance, courage, determination and strength. Andrew McMahon and the band are asking members of the fan community to create pieces of artwork that feature the word “Swim” and illustrate, in any way chosen, the meaning behind the word. They can be represented in an abstract or representational manner – any way the artist sees fit, in any medium the artist chooses!

Head over to JacksMannequin.com to find out all the submission details. Deadline for all artwork is May 29th.

The Record Life, Jakob Johnson

I knew you wanted to get to know 21-year-old Jakob Johnson, The Record Life. better. So, here goes!

Jakob was introduced to music early in life by his father, who he would go on road trips with accompanied by a mixtape soundtrack consisting of The Beatles, Lynyrd Skynard, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Green Day, and Social Distortion. “I really grew to love the melodies within the music,” he says. By the time Jake was 7, he was a member of the Central Phoenix based choir, touring here in the states and internationally.

“We sang a huge variety of stuff from early American soul songs to classical songs that were hundreds of years old and entirely in Latin, but they were always a cappella, and they always had six-part harmonies,” he says.

Here’s the fascinating story behind The Record Life’s debut album, Into the Sea of Something Big:
A while back, Jakob (or Jake as he’s often called) met a woman on MySpace who claimed she was a professional snowboarder and a fan of his music, offering him a place to stay in L.A., then supposedly suffering a series of mishaps, including losing both her parents, getting into a near-fatal car accident, claiming she was raped and losing her house. Despite his own friends’ skepticism, Johnson found himself falling in love with the voice on the other end of the telephone, until he discovered, quite by coincidence, that the pictures she had been sending him were of a college student at New York City’s Loyola Marymount. And for the girl he had fallen in love with, she actually lived in North Carolina and wasn’t a snowboarder at all!

“She did a number on me,” laughs Jake. “At least 11 of them. And there just so happens to be 11 songs on the record. Go figure.”

From the first falling in love (Got Me Good), to feeling the shock of hearing about the car crash (Head in My Hands) to the realization she wasn’t who she said she was (Not the Same) and the vow to walk away (Write This Down), Johnson pours his heart into his strange tale of love lost, found and lost again on MySpace, Facebook and iChat, a true, 21st century romance.

“I want to let everyone know, as dark as it gets, it’s gonna get light again one day,” Jake says of the experiences that led to the recording. “Everything’s gonna be alright. I’ve been through some serious emotional turmoil. I thought nothing could ever get worse, but it did – over and over and over and over again. It can get bad, but I promise it will get better. Just keep your head up. It will turn out OK.”

On the epic “My Lover, the Floodlight,” with its tribal drums and keyboard plunking, Johnson admits he was listening to Death Cab for Cutie when he wrote the song, “My interpretation of how a perfect relationship with my ideal would feel, just being with a smart girl who is as good-looking as she is intellectual.”

In the end, though, for Jake Johnson and The Record Life, it’s all about the song.

“If there’s a part that doesn’t make the whole song better, then it comes out,” he explains. “If there was a single goal on the album, it was to showcase these songs the way they deserve, and not let anything get in the way. Even it it’s the most ‘get-you-off’ musical part ever.”

For the sequel to The Record Life’s Into the Sea of Something Big, Jake is ready to take the show on the road, hopefully to a town near you.

“More than anything, I’m looking forward to playing these songs live,” he says, with videos of his performances already available at www.youtube.com/therecordlifemusic.
