Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson can’t catch a break when it comes to the people around her. Now the popular, talented, and out-spoken star is set to catch flack for something that wasn’t remotely her fault.

Her producer double dipped his backing track, without Kelly’s knowledge. Not only did he use it for Kelly’s ‘Already Gone,’ he also gave it to Beyonce for ‘Halo.’

Kelly knew that she’d possibly be perceived as a rip off artist, so she tried to keep her track off the radio. The song was released, though – despite her wishes.

Kelly Clarkson said she confronted her co-writer Ryan Tedder on the phone as soon as she heard ‘Halo’ on the radio. She was told that it was too late to make any changes to her record.

“No one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off,” she told Canada’s CBC radio (via NY Post.)

RCA also decided to release the single ‘Almost Gone’ to radio stations as Kelly’s third single – although Kelly fought against it.

“I fought and fought,” she said. “In the end, they’re releasing it without my consent. It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It’s kind of a sh- – -y situation, but . . . you know, you learn,” Clarkson added.

Halo or Already Gone… Which do you prefer?

I guess we’re continuing right along with Kelly Clarkson day here on Strike a Chord, eh?

Kelly Clarkson performed on the main stage at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, California on July 23. The pictures in this post are actually from the event.

Love her pink jacket and David Bowie tee.

Kelly has recently scored a great (and very well-deserved) honor: She has been invited to take part in the VH1 Divas Live event coming up in September. She’ll join Miley Cyrus, Adele, and Leona Lewis in the first Divas concert since 2004.

A representative of the Divas Live concert told the press: “Adele, Kelly, Leona and Miley have all captured the world’s attention with their talent and have earned their designation as VH1 Divas this year. Don’t let some of their young ages fool you — these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come.”

Kelly Clarkson's Album Cover - My Life Would Suck Without You

I love all things Kelly Clarkson – the voice, the attitude, the sense of humor, the beautiful smile….  She’s just one of my favorite performers ever, and I think she seems like she’d be a really fun person to know.

Her “My Life Would Suck Without You” cover is getting a lot of flack – particularly about the airbrushing.  It’s nearly as whacked out as what they did to Jennifer Hudson and Britney Spears (Circus).  Why do they keep doing this to female artists?!

Eh, whatever.  I love Kelly’s reaction, though.  It’s classic.  Kelly joked on her blog about how her recent album cover was photoshopped.  She wrote, “they have definitely photo-shopped the crap out of me but i don’t care haha! whoever she is, she looks great ha!

That she does – but she can’t hold a candle (or a lollipop) to the original.

Kelly Clarkson took the stage at the 102.7 KIIS-FM’s Wango Tango 2009 on May 9, 2009 in Irvine, California. Click each picture for the larger version.

How great is it to see Kelly back on stage?!?! The girl has one of the most powerful voices ever, as well as one of the greatest smiles.

Still reeling from news that Kanye West would be performing on tonight’s American Idol, I just read that none other than Kelly Clarkson will also be performing.

Kelly Clarkson will perform her new single, “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Good grief, this show’s pulling out all the stops!

American Idol’s Diverse Contestants

by Joi on March 11, 2009

Alexis GraceIt seems like I like more contestants on American Idol this season than ever before. It oughta make each episode a little more nerve wrecking, especially the elimination shows.

In years past, there have only been, like, 4 or so I really like out of the top 12. This season, though, I honestly like every contestant. Sure, I have my favorites (Hint: They’re the ones pictured in the post!) but I don’t dislike any of them.  For me, it’ll come down to individual performances each week.  A few could jump right in here with my favorites.  I’m keeping my eyes and ears on Megan Joy and Kris Allen.  If they cause me to sit up and take considerable notice, I’ll add their lovely faces to this post!

Last night, I personally thought Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert, Alexis Grace, Jasmine Murray, and Matt Giraurd had the best performances.   I thought Lil Rounds and Cris Allen sounded great, but I didn’t like them quite as well as the rest.

Alexis really took on a huge song, and I loved her performance.  Her voice is one of the most amazing voices I’ve everDanny Gokey heard – and, come on, I listen to music practically 24/7.  She’s fresh, unique, and I think she’ll be there at the end – IF people keep in mind that it’s a singing competitition!  You know how it goes, sometimes people tend to treat it as a popularity contest and just flood the studios with calls for their “guy” or “girl,”  irregardless of who had the better night.

Adam was born to be on stage, wasn’t he?!  The boy has the charisma and energy of the legendary Elvis Presley and I would pay good money for them to have another Elvis night so we could see what Adam would do with an Elvis song.    I expected him to have a great night with Michael Jackson’s music and he definitely did.

Someone that pleasantly surprised me was another favorite of mine, Danny Gokey.  I had no idea how he’d do with Michael Jackson night, and I was blown away.  His energy and level of fun were contagious and I smiled during the whole performance.  His voice is absolutely exceptional and he has one of the greatest personalities the show has seen since Bo Bice, Bucky Covington, and Kellie Pickler.

Lil RoundsLil Rounds has another one of the best voices in the competition, but something about the performance kept me from being overwhelmed.  She’s still a favorite, but there was something not quite as good as some of the others.  She looked stunning, no doubt, and sounded great – but, I don’t know.  Maybe I expect perfection from her.

Jasmine was adorable.  The judges were incredibly harsh with her, I thought.  I know it’s kind of different, hearing them live, but I just don’t understand what they thought was so wrong.

Someone I’ve been kind of on the fence with is Megan Joy.  I love her look, and her voice has a lot of potential.  While her stage presence isn’t quite as polished as some of the others, I actually like it.   It just shows that she is a complete newbie – an unprofessional, which is what this competition is all about.  I want to love her, but right now it’s just a strong like.  I totally hated her performance last night – the song choice was WAY wrong and the overall performance was just unfortunate.  Sadly there were probably a lot of people, like me who were on the fence with her – and she didn’t do anything to make us move in the right direction.    I’m almost 100 percent certain she’ll get another chance, though, and I’m also pretty certain she’ll do a much better job.

She does have one peculiar little swishy move that I would love for her to ditch.  After one performance, Ryan asked Adam Lamberther why she did it and she kind of got an attitude – she was all like, “I don’t remember doing that.”   If she goes back and watches her performances she’ll see that she did do that again and again.  And again, and again…  If it’s a good trick, by all means, keep pulling it out of the bag – but if it’s annoying (it is), throw it out.

Speaking of out.  Back to Adam Lambert.  I am overjoyed that the fact that pictures proving him to be gay didn’t dampen his fans’ enthusiasm one bit.  It shouldn’t!  What matters is what the contestant does on the stage and, later, in the recording studio.  Adam’s meant to be a star and that’s that.

Matt GiraudI also see a lot of star potential with Matt Giraurd and Allison Iraheta.  They have great, flawless voices and I love each one’s onstage  presence and style.

My only wish for Matt is that he’d do whatever he can to separate himself from the Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke comparisons.  When judges and fans start making comparisons, they begin to just see an imitator of the original.  Matt has the talent (big time!) to be his own  guy, and put forth his own sense of style and presence.

He does resemble Justin, but I’d love to see him pull away from dressing and performing so similarly to him.

Little Miss Allison is a contestant I hope will be around for many weeks.  She’s a breath of fresh air and her voice is Allison Irahetaincredible.  It catches me off guard every single time.  Each time she opens her mouth, it’s like WHOA!  Where’d that husky voice come from?!  She has a lot of power behind her voice and I’m anxious to see how it  holds up.  She’s like a baby Kelly Clarkson, and we all know how successful she’s been. (On a side note, I am SO excited about Kelly Clarkson’s new cd!  She’s back in a big way and her critics had better get ready for a steady diet of crow.)

Like I said, I honestly like all 13 of these contestants and  find myself pulling for each one to do well.  It’ll be sad to see two of them go home tonight.  Personally, I have a feeling that we’ll have to say goodbye to one of these guys:  Jorge Nunez, Michael Sarver, or Kris Allen.  Anoop Desai (who I didn’t think was nearly as bad as the judges said) seems to have a pretty loyal fanbase, so he might escape this week.  I’m afraid that it’s just a matter of who’ll leave with Jorge Nunez.

I KNOW I’ll cry when he leaves.  What a sweet person!

In the last post, I was hoping for Michael John’s career to be handled well – because, if it is, this guy will be a household name soon.

A perfect example of a singer handled poorly (the people who were supposedly there to help her basically shoved her under the bus) is another favorite of mine- Kelly Clarkson. She has wrapped up the recording for her fourth album which leaves me grinning like a cat that found a way into the canary’s cage. YESSSS!

Kelly has been touring with Reba McEntire this fall but will, hopefully, now focus her attentions on promoting album #4. Fans can expect an early 2009 release. She worked with many producers (such as Howard Benson and OneRepublic singer Ryan Tedder) on the cd. The first single is “My Life Would Suck Without You.”

Writer and producer Lukasz Gottwald, a.k.a. Dr. Luke, was involved with “My Life Would Suck Without You.” That bodes well considering the last two songs he was involved with were “Since U Been Gone” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes.” in which he cowrote the latter.

Dr. Luke has also worked with Daughtry, The Backstreet Boys, Leona Lewis as well as many others. He’s responsible for Pink’s single “U + Ur Hand” and teamed up with Avril Lavigne to cowrite and produce several songs including “Girlfriend.”

As if that’s not enough to prove he’s as good as it gets (especially for creating strong female songs), Dr. Luke’s also responsible for Katy Perry’s single “I Kissed A Girl” AND “Hot N Cold.”

To say that I’m anxious to hear this single would be the understatement of eternity.

Michael Johns Video and News

by Joi on November 19, 2008

Here’s a video of Michael Johns (one of the most talented Idols ever) singing a song from his upcoming album.

Can you believe just how talented the contestants last season were? Michael Johns, David Cook, Carly Smithson… If they’re cds and publicity are handled well (more about Kelly Clarkson in a minute – *cough cough*) these three will be the superstars they deserve to be.

I can’t wait to see and hear what each comes up with.
